Tybee Island, Georgia

Located about 20 minutes east of the historic town of Savannah, lies Tybee Island, one of Georgia’s most well-known barrier islands. Aside from its many annual visitors, about 3,500 year-round residents and various species of coastal wildlife are pleased to call this quaint, yet scenic island home. With a renowned three-mile stretch of tranquil white sand beaches, a heritage rich in history, and recreational opportunities to please the whole family, Tybee Island is the perfect environment in which to experience a true retreat from day to day life.

Though its moderate climate and down-to-earth, relaxed atmosphere are two of Tybee’s greatest attractions, the island also boasts a number of activities, sights, and places of interest.Visitors with a love of history will want to set aside an afternoon or two to tour some of the island’s historical landmarks:

  • Tybee Island Lighthouse – One of Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse, as well as being one of America’s most intact lighthouses (dated 1773). From the top of the lighthouse visitors can experience a picturesque view of the Atlantic and surrounding Georgia countryside.
  • Fort Pulaski - Once a Confederate fort of the American Civil War.
  • Fort Screven - Once a strategic defense post for coastal Georgia, this fort later served as the headquarters for antisubmarine forces against the German U-boats in the first and second World Wars.
  • Tybee Island Museum - With an intriguing collection of Civil War and historical Georgia memorabilia.
Other enjoyable sightseeing excursions might include a visit to the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, an evening stroll along the island’s south-end pier and pavilion to the sounds of live music, or a group picnic at one of Tybee’s scenic parks, or a visit to the historic district of Savannah, a short 20-minute driveaway.
For visitors who like a little more action, there are many recreational opportunities available on the island ranging from deep-sea fishing and diving excursions, hiking and biking tours of a nearby wildlife refuge, and surfing or kayaking lessons, to charter and casino boat cruises.
The number of charming little gift shops, art galleries and studios on the island will also delight visitors inclined to shop. As will the variety of  dining and nightspots that Tybee Island boasts.

Tybee Island is a short 45 minute drive from the Savannah International Airport (SAV) and is also only about four and a half hours by car from Atlanta, Georgia.
